🧂 Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg Potatoes(starchy variety, peeled and quartered)
  • 1 kg Carrots(peeled and roughly chopped)
  • 2 large Onions(peeled and quartered)
  • 100 g Butter
  • 150 ml Milk(warmed)
  • 750 g Ground beef
  • 250 g Ground pork
  • 50 g Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 medium Onion(finely chopped)
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp Nutmeg(freshly grated)
  • 100 g Bacon(streaky, for topping)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

Place potatoes, carrots, and quartered onions in a large pot. Cover with cold water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook for 20-25 minutes, or until tender.

    ⏱️ 25 minutes
  2. 2

While vegetables cook, prepare the gehaktbrood. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.

💡 Tip: Overmixing can result in a tough meatloaf.
  3. 3

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet. Top with streaky bacon slices.

    ⏱️ 10 minutes
  4. 4

Bake the gehaktbrood for 50-60 minutes, or until cooked through and browned. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

    ⏱️ 60 minutes
💡 Tip: Internal temperature should reach 71°C (160°F).
  5. 5

Drain the cooked vegetables, reserving about 100ml of the cooking water. Mash the vegetables with butter, warmed milk, and the reserved cooking water until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

💡 Tip: Adjust milk and water for desired consistency.
  6. 6

Serve the hutspot hot, topped with slices of the baked gehaktbrood. A simple gravy or jus can be served alongside.

💡 Pro Tips

  • For a smoother hutspot, you can use a potato ricer.
  • Ensure the meatloaf is not overcooked to keep it moist.
  • Leftover hutspot can be reheated gently on the stovetop or in the oven.

🔄 Variations

  • Add a pinch of allspice to the meatloaf mixture for extra flavor.
  • Serve with a side of pickled red cabbage for a tangy contrast.
