Bahraini Saffron Rice with Cardamom and Raisins - Bahrain traditional dish

🧂 Ingredients

  • 2 cups Basmati rice
  • 3 cups Water
  • 0.5 tsp Saffron threads(steeped in 2 tbsp warm water)
  • 4 crushed Cardamom pods
  • 0.5 cup Raisins
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Sugar(optional)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.

  2. 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, water, crushed cardamom pods, and salt. Bring to a boil.

  3. 3

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.

  4. 4

While the rice is cooking, gently sauté the raisins in butter in a small pan for 2-3 minutes until they plump up. If using sugar, add it here and stir until dissolved.

  5. 5

Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork. Drizzle the steeped saffron water over the rice and gently fold it in to distribute the color and aroma. Add the plumped raisins and toss lightly.

  6. 6

Cover the pot again and let it steam for 5 minutes off the heat before serving.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Ensure the saffron is steeped in warm water for at least 10 minutes to release its full color and flavor.
  • Do not overcook the rice, as it can become mushy.
  • Adjust the amount of cardamom to your preference.

🔄 Variations

  • Add a handful of toasted slivered almonds or pistachios for extra crunch.
  • Incorporate a pinch of cinnamon for added warmth.
