Bhutanese Turnip and Cheese Stew - Bhutan traditional dish

🧂 Ingredients

  • 500 g Turnips(peeled and cubed)
  • 150 g Bhutanese cheese (Datshi)(grated or crumbled (can substitute with a mix of cheddar and mozzarella))
  • 500 ml Water
  • 1 medium Onion(finely chopped)
  • 3 cloves Garlic(minced)
  • 1-2 Green chilies(finely chopped (optional, for a hint of heat))
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • to taste Salt
  • for serving Red rice

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

In a pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.

  2. 2

Add the minced garlic and chopped green chilies (if using) and cook for another minute until fragrant.

  3. 3

Add the cubed turnips to the pot and stir to coat them with the onion and garlic mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

  4. 4

Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cover the pot and let it cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the turnips are tender when pierced with a fork.

  5. 5

Reduce the heat to low. Gradually add the grated or crumbled Bhutanese cheese (or substitute), stirring continuously until it melts and creates a creamy sauce. Do not boil after adding the cheese.

💡 Tip: Stirring constantly prevents the cheese from clumping.
  6. 6

Season the stew with salt to taste. If the stew is too thick, add a little more water or broth to reach desired consistency.

💡 Tip: Bhutanese cheese can be quite salty, so taste before adding too much salt.
  7. 7

Serve the turnip and cheese stew hot, typically with Bhutanese red rice on the side.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Ensure the turnips are cooked until very tender before adding the cheese.
  • If using a substitute for Bhutanese cheese, a blend of sharp cheddar and a mild, meltable cheese like mozzarella or Gruyère can mimic the flavor and texture.
  • This dish is best enjoyed fresh.

🔄 Variations

  • Add a handful of chopped spinach or other leafy greens in the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  • For a heartier stew, add small cubes of cooked pork or chicken.
  • A pinch of chili flakes can be added for extra spice.
