Jamaican Sweet Potato Fritters - Jamaica traditional dish

🧂 Ingredients

  • 2 large Sweet potatoes(peeled and grated)
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup Sugar(or to taste)
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg(freshly grated)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 cup Milk(or as needed to form batter)
  • for frying Vegetable oil

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, combine the grated sweet potatoes, flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.

  2. 2

Gradually add milk, a little at a time, stirring until you achieve a thick but pourable batter consistency. It should not be too runny.

  3. 3

Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium-high heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

Carefully drop spoonfuls of the sweet potato batter into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches.

  5. 5

Fry the fritters for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to turn them.

  6. 6

Remove the fritters from the oil and drain them on paper towels to absorb excess grease.

  7. 7

Serve warm as a snack or a side dish.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to get crispy fritters.
  • Grate the sweet potatoes finely for a smoother texture.
  • Adjust the sugar and spices to your preference.

🔄 Variations

  • Add a pinch of ground ginger for extra warmth.
  • A few chopped raisins can be added to the batter for sweetness and texture.
