Jamaican Sweet Potato Porridge
A comforting and nutritious breakfast staple in Jamaica, this creamy porridge is made from grated sweet potatoes, coconut milk, spices, and a touch of sweetness. It's a wholesome and satisfying way to start the day.

🧂 Ingredients
- 2 lbs Sweet potatoes(peeled and grated)
- 2 cans Full-fat coconut milk(13.5 oz each)
- 1 cup Water(or more, to reach desired consistency)
- 0.5 cup Condensed milk(or to taste)
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
- 0.5 tsp Ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- 0.25 tsp Salt
- 3 whole Pimento berries (allspice berries)(optional, for infusing flavor)
👨🍳 Instructions
- 1
In a large pot, combine the grated sweet potatoes, coconut milk, water, condensed milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, salt, and whole pimento berries (if using).
- 2
Stir everything together well to ensure no lumps of sweet potato remain.
- 3
Place the pot over medium heat and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.
- 4
Cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sweet potatoes are tender and the porridge has thickened to your desired consistency. If it becomes too thick, add a little more water or coconut milk.
- 5
Remove the whole pimento berries before serving, if used.
- 6
Serve hot, with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg on top if desired.
💡 Pro Tips
- ✓For a smoother porridge, you can blend some of the cooked mixture before returning it to the pot.
- ✓Adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more or less condensed milk.
- ✓If you don't have condensed milk, you can use evaporated milk and granulated sugar.
🔄 Variations
- Add a tablespoon of peanut butter for a nutty flavor.
- Include a splash of rum for an adult version.
- For a lighter version, use light coconut milk.
