Bogobe Jwa Lerotse - Botswana traditional dish

🧂 Ingredients

  • 2 cups Sorghum meal (Bopi jwa mabele)
  • 0.5 medium Lerotse melon(peeled, seeds removed, and cut into 1-inch cubes (pumpkin can be substituted))
  • 0.75 cup Sour milk (Madila)
  • 3 cups Water(plus more as needed)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt(to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar(optional, to taste)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

In a large pot, bring 3 cups of water to a vigorous boil. Add the cubed lerotse melon and cover. As the melon reduces in volume, continue adding more cubes until all are added. Cook for about 30 minutes, or until the lerotse is soft and can be easily mashed.

  2. 2

In a separate bowl, mix the sorghum meal with a little water to form a smooth, lump-free paste, similar to pancake batter.

  3. 3

Gradually pour the sorghum paste into the boiling lerotse mixture while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer, stirring frequently to avoid sticking to the bottom of the pot.

  4. 4

Continue to cook until the porridge thickens to your desired consistency, which may take about 20 minutes. Add salt and sugar (if using) and stir well.

  5. 5

Stir in the sour milk and simmer for another 5 minutes. Serve the Bogobe Jwa Lerotse hot.

💡 Pro Tips

  • If lerotse melon is unavailable, pumpkin can be used as a substitute, offering a similar flavor profile.
  • Stirring constantly is key to achieving a smooth, lump-free porridge.
  • The consistency can be adjusted by adding more water if it becomes too thick.

🔄 Variations

  • Can be served with meat, vegetables, or pickled fish.
  • A touch of butter can be added for extra richness.
