Sultjash
Kosovo Rice Pudding
Sultjash is a comforting and creamy rice pudding, a beloved traditional dessert in Kosovo. It's made with simple ingredients like rice, milk, and sugar, often flavored with vanilla or cinnamon, offering a sweet and satisfying end to any meal.

๐ง Ingredients
- 3 liters Milk(preferably whole milk)
- 3 cups Rice(cracked rice recommended)
- 2 cups Powdered Sugar(adjust to taste)
- to taste Cinnamon powder(for topping)
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract(optional)
- 1 pinch Salt
๐จโ๐ณ Instructions
- 1
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
- 2
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, milk, sugar, vanilla extract (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir well.
- 3
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring frequently to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom.
- 4
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the rice simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for about 30-40 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the pudding has thickened to a creamy consistency. Be careful not to let the milk boil over.
- 5
Adjust the consistency by adding a little more milk if it's too thick. The pudding will thicken further as it cools.
- 6
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Spoon the Sultjash into serving bowls or glasses.
- 7
Serve warm or chilled, sprinkled with cinnamon powder for garnish.
๐ก Pro Tips
- โStirring frequently is key to achieving a smooth, creamy texture and preventing the rice from sticking.
- โUsing whole milk will result in a richer, creamier pudding.
- โThe pudding will thicken considerably as it cools, so aim for a slightly looser consistency than you desire in the final product.
