🧂 Ingredients

  • 2 cups Cornmeal
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 500 g Ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium Onion(finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves Garlic(minced)
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 1.5 cups Milk
  • 0.5 cup Vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 tsp Black pepper(freshly ground)
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tbsp Dried parsley or dill

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  2. 2

In a large skillet, brown the ground meat over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess fat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 3

Stir in black pepper, paprika, and dried herbs into the meat mixture. Cook for another minute until fragrant.

  4. 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, and salt.

  5. 5

In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and oil (or melted butter) until well combined.

  6. 6

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.

  7. 7

Gently fold the meat and onion mixture into the cornbread batter.

  8. 8

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.

  9. 9

Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden brown.

  10. 10

Let cool slightly before cutting into squares and serving.

💡 Pro Tips

  • For a richer flavor, use lamb instead of beef.
  • Ensure the meat mixture is not too wet before adding it to the batter.
  • You can add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a touch of heat.

🔄 Variations

  • Add shredded cheese (like feta or Kashkaval) to the batter.
  • Incorporate finely chopped bell peppers or zucchini into the meat mixture.
