Slovak Fruit Dumplings
Ovocné Knedle
Soft, tender dumplings made from a simple dough, filled with seasonal fruits like plums, apricots, or berries. Traditionally served warm, topped with melted butter, sugar, and toasted breadcrumbs or poppy seeds.

🧂 Ingredients
- 300 g All-purpose flour(plus more for dusting)
- 1 dl Milk(warmed)
- 1 unit Large egg
- 6 tbsp Unsalted butter(divided, melted for serving)
- 1 pinch Salt
- 500 g Fresh plums or apricots(pitted and halved if large)
- 3 tbsp Breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp Powdered sugar(for topping)
👨🍳 Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and warmed milk. Add 1 tablespoon of melted butter and mix until a semi-hard dough forms. Let it cool slightly before adding the egg and kneading until smooth.
- 2
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 5 mm thickness. Cut into squares large enough to wrap around the fruit.
- 3
Place a plum or apricot half in the center of each dough square. Carefully wrap the dough around the fruit, sealing the edges to form a smooth ball. Dust your hands with flour if needed.
- 4
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Gently drop the dumplings into the boiling water. Cook for 10-15 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- 5
While the dumplings are cooking, melt the remaining butter in a pan. Add the breadcrumbs and toast them over medium heat until golden brown. Stir in the powdered sugar.
- 6
Drain the cooked dumplings and transfer them to a serving bowl. Drizzle with melted butter and sprinkle generously with the toasted breadcrumb mixture.
💡 Pro Tips
- ✓Use ripe but firm fruit for the best flavor and texture.
- ✓If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. If too dry, add a splash of milk.
- ✓Other fruit options include strawberries, cherries, or blueberries.
