Strapačky s údenou rybou a kapustou
A hearty and flavorful dish featuring strapačky (potato dumplings) combined with smoked fish and sauerkraut, offering a unique twist on traditional Slovak cuisine.

🧂 Ingredients
- 500 g Potatoes(peeled and grated)
- 200 g All-purpose flour
- 1 large Egg
- 1 tsp Salt
- 300 g Smoked mackerel or trout(flaked)
- 400 g Sauerkraut(drained and roughly chopped)
- 1 medium Onion(finely chopped)
- 50 g Butter
- 100 ml Sour cream(for serving (optional))
- 2 tbsp Fresh dill(chopped, for garnish)
👨🍳 Instructions
- 1
Squeeze excess water from grated potatoes. Mix with flour, egg, and salt to form a dough. If too sticky, add a little more flour.
💡 Tip: Ensure potatoes are well-drained to prevent gummy dumplings. - 2
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Drop small pieces of the dough into the boiling water using two spoons or by hand.
💡 Tip: Cook until the dumplings float to the surface and are cooked through. - 3
While dumplings cook, melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- 4
Add the drained sauerkraut to the skillet with the onions. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauerkraut is tender and slightly caramelized.
- 5
Once the strapačky are cooked, drain them well. Add the drained dumplings to the skillet with the sauerkraut and onions. Gently toss to combine.
💡 Tip: Be careful not to break the dumplings. - 6
Add the flaked smoked fish to the skillet. Stir gently to distribute the fish throughout the mixture. Cook for another 3-5 minutes until the fish is heated through.
- 7
Serve hot, garnished with fresh dill. Optionally, serve with a dollop of sour cream.
💡 Tip: A sprinkle of black pepper can also enhance the flavor.
💡 Pro Tips
- ✓The type of smoked fish can be varied; smoked trout or herring also work well.
- ✓Ensure the sauerkraut is well-drained to avoid a watery dish.
- ✓For a richer flavor, a small amount of rendered bacon fat can be used instead of some butter.
