Namibian Wild Melon and Biltong Salad - Namibia traditional dish

🧂 Ingredients

  • 1 medium Wild melon (Kandjod or similar sweet melon)(seeded and cubed)
  • 150 g Biltong (dried, cured beef)(thinly sliced or torn into pieces)
  • 0.5 small Red onion(thinly sliced)
  • 0.5 cup Fresh coriander(chopped)
  • 3 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Black pepper(freshly ground)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

Prepare the wild melon by deseeding and cutting it into bite-sized cubes.

  2. 2

Thinly slice the red onion. If the onion is too pungent, you can soak it in cold water for 10 minutes and then drain.

  3. 3

In a large bowl, combine the cubed melon, sliced red onion, and torn biltong pieces.

  4. 4

In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil and lemon juice to create the dressing. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

  5. 5

Pour the dressing over the melon and biltong mixture. Gently toss to combine all ingredients.

  6. 6

Garnish with fresh chopped coriander just before serving.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Ensure the melon is ripe and sweet for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of onion to your preference.
  • Biltong can be found in specialty African or South African stores, or online.

🔄 Variations

  • Add some crumbled feta cheese for a salty, creamy element.
  • Include a handful of toasted pumpkin seeds for added crunch.
  • A pinch of chili flakes can be added to the dressing for a touch of heat.
