Serbian Plum Cake (Kolač sa šljivama) - Serbia traditional dish

🧂 Ingredients

  • 200 g Butter(room temperature)
  • 200 g Sugar
  • 120 ml Greek yogurt
  • 2 unit Large eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla essence
  • 300 g All-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Baking powder
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon(ground)
  • 800 g Plums(pitted and quartered)
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar(for topping)

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line a 26 cm (10-inch) springform pan with baking paper.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. 3

Add the Greek yogurt, eggs (one at a time), and vanilla essence. Mix until well combined. The mixture might look curdled at this stage.

  4. 4

Gradually add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and cinnamon. Mix until just combined, ensuring no dry flour remains at the bottom.

  5. 5

Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan. Spread half of the prepared plums evenly over the batter.

  6. 6

Pour the remaining batter over the plums, then arrange the remaining plums on top.

  7. 7

Sprinkle the top with brown sugar and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

  8. 8

Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Ensure butter and eggs are at room temperature for a smoother batter.
  • Do not overmix the batter after adding the flour.
  • The cake is delicious served plain, dusted with powdered sugar, or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

🔄 Variations

  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the dry ingredients for extra spice.
  • Use a mix of plums and other stone fruits like apricots.
  • For a richer flavor, a tablespoon of rum can be added to the batter.
