Töltött Paprika Sonkával (Stuffed Peppers with Ham) - Hungary traditional dish

🧂 Ingredients

  • 4 large Bell peppers(any color, tops removed and seeds scooped out)
  • 300 g Ground pork
  • 100 g Cooked ham(finely diced)
  • 100 g Rice(uncooked, rinsed)
  • 1 medium Onion(finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves Garlic(minced)
  • 2 tsp Paprika(sweet Hungarian paprika)
  • 1 tsp Marjoram(dried)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 400 g Canned diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 200 ml Vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

💡 Tip: Ensure oven is fully preheated before baking.
  2. 2

In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, diced ham, rinsed rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, paprika, marjoram, salt, and pepper. Mix well to form the stuffing.

💡 Tip: Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. 3

Stuff the prepared bell peppers evenly with the meat mixture. Do not pack too tightly, as the rice will expand.

💡 Tip: Leave a small gap at the top to prevent stuffing from spilling out.
  4. 4

In a baking dish, combine the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, vegetable broth, and olive oil. Stir to combine.

💡 Tip: Use a dish large enough to hold the peppers snugly.
  5. 5

Place the stuffed peppers upright in the baking dish. Pour the tomato sauce around the peppers.

💡 Tip: The sauce should come about halfway up the sides of the peppers.
  6. 6

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the peppers are tender and the stuffing is cooked through.

💡 Pro Tips

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of sour cream to the stuffing mixture.

  • Leftovers can be reheated gently on the stovetop or in the oven.

🔄 Variations

  • Add a handful of chopped fresh parsley to the stuffing for extra freshness.
  • Serve with a dollop of sour cream or a side of crusty bread.
