Latvian Meatloaf Patties
Kotletes
Savory, tender patties made from a mixture of ground pork and beef, seasoned and often pan-fried or baked. They resemble small meatloaves or large meatballs.

๐ง Ingredients
- 500 g Ground pork
- 500 g Ground beef
- 2 large White bread slices(stale, crusts removed)
- 100 ml Milk (or water)(for soaking bread)
- 1 medium Onion(finely chopped or grated)
- 1 large Egg(lightly beaten)
- 50 g Breadcrumbs(plus more for coating (optional))
- 1 tsp Salt
- 0.5 tsp Black pepper
- 2 tbsp Oil (for frying)
๐จโ๐ณ Instructions
- 1
Soak the bread slices in milk (or water) for about 10 minutes until soft. Squeeze out excess liquid.
- 2
In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, ground beef, soaked bread, finely chopped or grated onion, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly with your hands until all ingredients are well incorporated.
๐ก Tip: Do not overmix, as this can make the kotletes tough. - 3
Form the mixture into oval-shaped patties, about 1.5-2 cm (0.6-0.8 inches) thick. If desired, lightly coat the patties in extra breadcrumbs.
- 4
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place the kotletes in the hot oil and brown them on both sides, about 4 minutes per side.
๐ก Tip: Ensure the pan is hot before adding the patties to prevent sticking. - 5
Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the skillet, and cook for another 15-20 minutes, or until the kotletes are cooked through and no longer pink inside.
๐ก Tip: Alternatively, after browning, you can transfer the kotletes to a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 180ยฐC (350ยฐF) for 20-25 minutes. - 6
Serve hot, often with mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes, or a side salad.
๐ก Pro Tips
- โFor a richer flavor, you can add finely chopped sautรฉed onions or a pinch of marjoram to the meat mixture.
- โUsing a mix of pork and beef provides a good balance of flavor and tenderness.
- โIf your meat is very lean, adding a tablespoon of sour cream can help keep the kotletes moist.
