Svenska Köttbullar med Gräddsås
A quintessential Swedish comfort food, these tender meatballs are simmered in a rich, creamy gravy, traditionally served with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, and pickled cucumbers.

🧂 Ingredients
- 500 g Ground beef and pork mixture
- 0.5 dl Breadcrumbs
- 1 dl Milk
- 1 large Egg
- 1 medium Yellow onion(finely grated or minced)
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 0.5 tsp Allspice(ground)
- 1 tsp Salt
- 0.5 tsp Black pepper(freshly ground)
- 2 tbsp Butter(for frying)
- 1 tbsp Butter(for sauce)
- 1 tbsp All-purpose flour
- 2 dl Beef or vegetable broth
- 2 dl Heavy cream
- 1 tsp Soy sauce
- Lingonberry jam(for serving)
- Pickled cucumbers(for serving)
- Mashed potatoes(for serving)
👨🍳 Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, grated onion, Dijon mustard, allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the meatballs tough.
- 2
Roll the mixture into small, uniform meatballs (about 1-inch in diameter).
- 3
Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside. Do not cook them through at this stage.
- 4
In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1 tbsp of butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to form a roux.
- 5
Gradually whisk in the broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened.
- 6
Stir in the heavy cream and soy sauce. Return the browned meatballs to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
- 7
Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, and pickled cucumbers.
💡 Pro Tips
- ✓For extra juicy meatballs, ensure the mixture is not overmixed.
- ✓Browning the meatballs in batches prevents overcrowding the pan, which leads to steaming rather than browning.
- ✓The sauce can be thinned with a little extra broth or milk if it becomes too thick.
