Szilvás Batyu
Sweet Plum Dumplings
Szilvás Batyu are delightful sweet dumplings filled with tender plums, encased in a soft, potato-based dough. They are typically boiled and then coated in toasted breadcrumbs and sugar, creating a comforting dessert or a satisfying meatless main course.

🧂 Ingredients
- 600 g Potatoes(cooked and riced or mashed)
- 250 g All-purpose flour(plus more for dusting)
- 1 large Egg
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 10 medium Plums(pitted and halved)
- 50 g Sugar(for plum filling)
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon(for plum filling)
- 3 tbsp Butter
- 150 g Breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp Powdered sugar(for dusting (optional))
👨🍳 Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the riced or mashed potatoes, flour, egg, and salt. Mix until a soft, pliable dough forms. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky, but avoid adding too much, as it can make the dumplings tough.
- 2
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into squares approximately 3x3 inches.
- 3
In a small bowl, mix the pitted and halved plums with sugar and cinnamon.
- 4
Place a spoonful of the plum mixture in the center of each dough square. Fold the dough over the plums to create a sealed dumpling, shaping them into a round or bun-like form (batyu means 'bundle' or 'bag'). Pinch the edges firmly to prevent them from opening during cooking.
- 5
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a gentle boil. Carefully add the dumplings, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until they float to the surface and are cooked through.
- 6
While the dumplings are cooking, melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the breadcrumbs and toast until golden brown, stirring constantly.
- 7
Using a slotted spoon, remove the cooked dumplings from the water and drain well. Gently toss them in the toasted breadcrumbs to coat.
- 8
Serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar.
💡 Pro Tips
- ✓Ensure the potato dough is not too wet or too dry for the best texture.
- ✓Pinch the dumpling edges very securely to prevent the filling from leaking out.
- ✓Don't overcook the dumplings, as they can become mushy.
