Luxembourgish Potato and Bacon Bake
A comforting and savory layered bake featuring thinly sliced potatoes, crispy bacon, and a creamy garlic sauce, all baked until golden and tender. This dish is a perfect side or a satisfying main course.

๐ง Ingredients
- 2.5 kg Potatoes(peeled and thinly sliced (about 3mm thick))
- 250 g Bacon(chopped)
- 1 cup Heavy cream
- 2 cups Milk
- 4 cloves Garlic(grated or finely minced)
- 200 g Grated cheese(Gruyรจre or your favorite melting cheese)
- to taste Salt
- to taste Black pepper
๐จโ๐ณ Instructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 190ยฐC (375ยฐF).
- 2
In a skillet, fry the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy and golden brown. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on a paper towel to drain. Reserve about 1 tablespoon of bacon fat in the skillet.
- 3
In a bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, grated garlic, salt, and pepper. This will be your creamy sauce.
- 4
Lightly grease a large ovenproof dish (approximately 9x13 inches) with a little of the reserved bacon fat or butter.
- 5
Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared dish, overlapping them slightly. Sprinkle about a third of the crispy bacon and a third of the grated cheese over the potatoes.
- 6
Pour about a third of the creamy garlic sauce over the layer. Repeat the layering process two more times: potatoes, bacon, cheese, and sauce, until all ingredients are used.
- 7
Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes.
- 8
Remove the foil and continue baking for another 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a knife and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- 9
Let the bake rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to set slightly.
๐ก Pro Tips
- โFor an extra layer of flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the cream mixture.
- โIf you prefer a crispier top, you can briefly place the dish under the broiler for the last few minutes of baking, watching carefully to prevent burning.
- โLeftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
